MRTS

MRTS (MASS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM)

One of the latest developments in Chennai is the Mass Rapid Transit System populary known as MRTS. It is called as "Parakkum rail" in tamil. As the population of Chennai is swelling day by day mass transport systems are getting popular. MRTS is a suburban train service (Electric Multiple Unit) run mostly on an elevated structure. It covers a distance of 27 kms from Chennai Beach to Velacherry, with the following 17 stations:-

Chennai Fort
Park Town
Chintadripet
Chepauk
Thiruvallikeni
Light House
Thirumayilai
Mandaiveli
Greenways Road
Kotturpuram
Kasthurba Nagar
Indira Nagar
Thiruvanmiyur
Taramani
Perungudi
Velacherry


The whole project was planned in three phases. Two phases have been completed and the third phase between Velacherry and St.Thomas Mount is incomplete. The network is operated by Southern Railway, a zone of Indian Railways. The distance between Chennai Beach and Velacherry is covered in 40 minutes, whereas it may take nearly 2 hours to cover the same distance during peak hours on road. Each station has a bus bay to link the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses. Common ticketing is planned for a later stage. Monthly seasons, Children and students concession are available.
