The full expansion of PIN is Postal Index Number, which is used by the postal department to deliver letters and other services throughout the country. It is a 6 digit no, with each digit having its own significance. India is totally divided into 8 regions for postal purposes. The first digit indicates this 8 regions. The first two regions indicate the sub regions. The first 3 digits together indicate the sorting district and the last 3 digits indicate the delivery post office. The various regions and sub regions are shown in the following tables

You can go here http://indiapost.gov.in/Pin/pinsearch.aspx and type the name of the place, the pin will be shown instantaneously. Likewise you can search for the PIN districwise and also statewise. Everything is customised in this search
